Its mission is to improve the quality of life in Palm Beach County through litter prevention education, beautification efforts and environmental stewardship.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
It is our belief that each of us holds an obligation to preserve and protect our environment. Through our everyday choices and actions, we collectively have a huge impact on our world. It's really a simple concept, but one with far reaching effects. KPBCBl follows a practical approach that unites citizens, businesses and government to find solutions that advance our core issues of preventing litter, reducing waste, and beautifying communities.
Program History:
Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., formerly named Beautiful Palm Beaches, was organized in 1988 by a group of grassroots volunteers.
It originally focused primarily on landscape beautification in central Palm Beach County, especially along the I-95 corridor.
On October 11, 1994, we expanded our mission and coverage area to serve all of Palm Beach County as the local non-profit affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.
Events:
International Coastal Cleanup
Great Ameircan Cleanup
Work with Adopting Groups and other groups that wish to do cleanup or beautification projects
Additional Information:
· Education and Beautification Grant for Elementary Schools Educational experiences and performances emphasizing environmental stewardship, and funding for campus beautification/outdoor classrooms are provided to qualifying elementary schools through this grant program administered by KPBCB.
· Great American Cleanup (GAC)Each April since 1994, KPBCB has coordinated The Great American Cleanup that encourages citizens to participate in hands-on activities that dramatically improve their communities, creating healthier, cleaner and safer environments across the nation. Activities include cleaning up waterways and seashores, picking up litter, planting trees, beautifying parks and conducting recycling collections. GAC is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful and is coordinated locally by KPBCB in partnership with the Solid Waste Authority. In addition, volunteers are involved in the painting and fixing up of run-down buildings through the “Rebuilding Together” initiative.
· International Coastal Cleanup
KPBCB is the county coordinator for this
annual international cleanup sponsored by the
Ocean Conservancy. It is held on the third
Saturday in September each year, with cleanup
sites at area beaches, the Lake Worth Lagoon,
other waterways, neighborhoods and
roadways.Every September, thousands of local
volunteer participate in this effort in Palm
Beach County.
· Cleanup and Beautification Support
KPBCB supports local cleanup and beautification initiatives throughout the year by providing logistical supplies and support to volunteer groups. This includes sponsorship of events such as “Paint Your Heart Out” which is held to paint the homes of homeowners in need, particularly the elderly, handicapped, and families with children. KPBCB also sponsors a program to give away special pick up tools to groups to make litter cleanups more efficient.
· Special Programs
KPBCB sponsors special programs that support our mission. This has included many grant programs that support beautification efforts throughout the county including reforestation programs aimed at replacing tree canopy lost to the recent hurricanes, and restoration of unique county sites such as Elders’ Cove in Dreher Park, West Palm Beach. KPBCB has also functioned as applicant administrator for over $12 million dollars in grant dollars for landscape projects for major thoroughfares in the County in partnership with the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners and the Metropolitan Planning Organization/Florida Department of Transportation.
· Information Clearinghouse
KPBCB promotes and provides information to the general public about volunteer opportunities supporting programs such as “Adopt a Highway” (State), “Adopt a Road” (County), “Adopt a Park” (County), “Adopt a Street” (Municipal), and “Adopt a Spot” (Solid Waste Authority) as well as recycling and other types of environmental information.
· Community Outreach
KPBCB participates in community events and presentations in order to reach the public with its “clean it up, fix it up, and keep it up” message.
