Mission Statement:
The SSJ Mission Corps is a year-long volunteer program of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in the city of Philadelphia for young adult women. Volunteers are invited to open themselves to being challenged and transformed as they work for justice and reach out to meet the needs of the "dear neighbors"; growing to understand the deeper meaning of "One Year to Change a Life." While living in community volunteers focus on justice, spirituality, and simple living. You give us one year, we'll give you a deeper understanding of yourself, your neighbor, and God. Volunteers serve the urban poor and marginalized in Philadelphia, live in community with fellow volunteers, and take time to reflect on their service experiences with one another, and challenge each other in prayer and living out the Gospel mission.

Goal of Program:
SSJ Mission Corps volunteers are women who live together in an intentional community while focusing on simplicity and serving in ministries with those who are materially poor. In addition to living in community and working with justice issues, volunteers participate in theological reflection, sharing the state of the heart, and retreat experiences- all mentored in the spirit of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
Type of Placement:
Long-term: Education, Advocacy, Social Services, Community Organizing and Parish Ministry. Short-term: Education. Summer Program: Retreat House work.
Service Area:
Philadelphia, PA (Long and Short Term), Cape May Point, NJ (Summer Program)
Service Length:
Long-term: 11 months, August-June. Short-term: Alternative Spring Break (6-10 days). Summer: End of June to Mid-August (two months).
Requirements:
Long-term: Women, 21-30 years or older, must be at least 4 years out of high school with college and/or work experience, a willingness and ability to work and relate to others, a sense of humor, flexibility and good physical and emotional health. Short-term: Women and men, 18 years or older, a willingness and ability to work and relate to others, a sense of humor, flexibility and good physical and emotional health. Summer: Women, 19-30 (must have completed one year of college), a willingness and ability to work and relate to others, a sense of humor, flexibility and good physical and emotional health.
Financial Arrangement:
Long-term: Room and board, medical insurance (one year commitment), monthly stipend, transportation for ministry, retreat opportunities and possible college loan deferment. Short-term: Room and board. Summer: Room and board, monthly stipend.
Living Arrangements:
Long-term: Volunteers live in community in the city of Philadelphia. Short-term: On-site dormitory style living. Summer: Volunteers live in community within the setting of a retreat house.
Program Size:
