COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Student Engagement with One to One course will introduce educators to one of the most powerful factors affecting student achievement -student engagement. Participants will explore strategies in one to one learning environments, for transforming their units to better engage students by rethinking their content, student work products and teaching and learning processes. They will learn to identify the characteristics of engaged learners, assess their students' level of engagement and reflect upon their own teaching practices for engaging students.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Transform units to engage students in one-to-one classrooms
  2. Use strategies from the course for engaging students in their learning
  3. Identify characteristics of engaged learners and connections to student achievement
  4. Identify and incorporate classroom management issues and
  5. Implement solutions for a one-to-one classroom

TEXTS, READINGS, INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES:

Required Texts:

  • Course materials will be provided via the Intel Education Transforming Learning interactive online eLearning and the on-line course module.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

In order to receive a Passing grade, the participant must complete the following course requirements:

  1. Course activities:
  1. Attend orientation session and participate in course forum discussions, projects, and activities.
  1. Online activities: Each student will complete the following:
  1. Assigned readings, links, videos and research on resources.
  2. Complete all Sessions and Lessons/ Activities.
  3. Reply to all discussion forums within each of the orientation and 6 modules using the course posting self-assessment rubric as a guideline.
  4. Respond to at least two other postings within each module discussion forum sharing your ideas and thoughts.
  5. Complete and post Action Plan following the course guidelines. This plan should include the following:
    • your reasoning and motivation for providing student engagement through one to one
    • a list of ways you can enable students to become self-directed learners in your classroom
    • integration of online learning strategies
    • a list of tools and resources that will be used in the design of your one to one plan
    • a list of online tools and resources for your students
    • assessment rubrics and their use for gauging student needs, self-direction, collaboration and checking for understanding
    • steps to ensure safe and ethical online learning
    • implementation considerations of skills training, pedagogy, evaluations and feedback related to your one to one plan
  6. Participate in Final Sharing Showcase where you will present and explain your action plan to the cohort. A self-assessment rubric and course assessment rubric will be used for grading criteria.

Description:

CLASS SCHEDULE

This "blended-learning" course will include at 6-7 hours of on-line web conferencing components (Adobe Connect) or face-to-face connection and an on-line facilitated course that will include 30+ hours of interactive tutorials, exercises, individual work, and facilitated discussions. The 30+ hours of on-line facilitated course work will take place over a 6-7 week period.

Week One
:
Module One: Student Engagement with One to One
In Module 1, participants explore student engagement and the connection to deep learning necessary for students to achieve. They learn about the types and levels of student engagement and characteristics of engaged learners. Participants are introduced to a framework to guide them in transforming their units to engage students and begin to explore a range of technology for supporting student engagement in one to one classrooms.

Objectives - Teachers will:

  • View examples of engaged learners in one to one learning environments and reflect upon their own teaching practices.
  • Understand the meaning of student engagement, the characteristics of engaged learners, and the connection between engagement and deep learning.
  • Explore the different types and levels of student engagement and assess their students' level of engagement.
  • Envision a highly engaged classroom by investigating engaging games.
  • Learn about a framework for transforming units that engage students.
  • Begin to explore a range of use of technology to support student engagement in a one to one learning environment.

Week Two:
Module Two: Student Engagement through Content
In this module, participants explore four key characteristics of content that promote student engagement in one to one classrooms. They begin to transform their own unit content by incorporating those characteristics, and add ideas for engaging students to their Curriculum Map.
Objectives - Teachers will:

  • Identify four key characteristics of content that promote student engagement in a one to one classroom
  • Apply characteristics of content to the transformation of their own unit to better engage students
  • Chart their units in a Curriculum Map and add ideas for enhancing unit content for student engagement
  • Explore technology tools for engaging students with content in one to one classrooms.

Week Three:
Module Three: Engagement through Student Products
In Module 3, participants review aspects of authentic intellectual work, identify the key elements of authentic learning, and learn about the powerful role authentic work plays in student engagement. They learn three teaching and learning strategies that support students as they create authentic work products. Participants then incorporate these strategies into their own unit, and plan similar modifications for their curriculum.
Objectives - Teachers will:

  • Learn why engagement is valuable in both school and the workplace.
  • Identify strategies to create lessons that enable students to develop authentic work products.
  • Understand the importance of clear criteria and the role of technology in improving student engagement.

Week Four:
Module Four: Processes for Engaging Students
In Module 4 participants explore processes for helping students to make sense of content. These processes provide opportunities for students to connect with other people in productive, safe and authentic ways to deepen their thinking. Participants examine lessons that incorporate processes for engaging students in one to one classrooms and apply those processes in the transformation of their own unit. They continue to add ideas to their Curriculum Map for engaging students.
Objectives - Teachers will:

  • Contrast lessons with processes that engage students with lessons that are more traditional
  • Explore characteristics of units with processes that engage students
  • Continue to transform their own unit by incorporating engaging processes
  • Add ideas for incorporating engaging processes to their units in their Curriculum Map
  • Explore technology tools for supporting engaging processes in one to one classrooms.

Week Five:
Module 5: Supporting Engaged Learning in One to One Classrooms
In Module 5, participants consider the implications for classroom management when engaging students in a one to one classroom. They develop their own classroom management plan by exploring the concepts of self-directed behavior, students as management partners and digital citizenship. They conclude the course by completing the transformation of own unit to better engage their students, and by reviewing and enhancing their Curriculum Map to include engaging elements.
Objectives - Teachers will:

  • Identify the key elements of classroom management
  • Define and promote self-directed behavior, students as management partners and digital citizenship in one to one classrooms
  • Complete the transformation of their own unit to better engage their students
  • Incorporate additional ideas in their Curriculum Map for engaging their students in learning.
