School Setting:
Project-based learning (PBL) is at the heart of the instructional approach at LPCA. PBL uses technology and inquiry to engage scholars with issues and questions that are relevant to their lives. In our classrooms, teachers design rigorous projects aligned to state and district standards and customize them to their location and the interests of scholars.
Scholars work in teams to acquire and apply knowledge and skills to solve problems. Our approach to PBL fundamentally changes the role of the facilitator and scholar. Instead of traditional one instructor to many scholars, teachers become facilitators and coaches who guide students to take charge of their own learning, invent their own solutions and develop self-management techniques. We invest deeply in the process through ongoing training and support to ensure all facilitators can become effective in this transformative approach to learning. Scholars become active learners and doers who take responsibility to complete projects. They develop the tools to handle long, complex tasks and manage their time. They work in teams to create products such as presentations, designs, plays, short stories and prototypes. Scholars acquire not only subject-matter knowledge, but also the skills they need to thrive in college, career and life.
All classrooms for grades 6-8 have a one-to-one computing ratio. With access to Web-enabled computers, every scholar becomes a self-directed learner who no longer needs to rely primarily on teachers or textbooks for knowledge and direction. A proprietary Web-based learning system called Echo unifies students’ learning experiences, enabling them to share projects online, collaborate, communicate, research and create new knowledge. With this learning platform, our schools are literally and figuratively networked together to share learning, successful projects, blogs, resources and best practices with other NewTech Network schools around the nation. The system will provide a structure for teachers to confidently manage a new approach to learning, transforming themselves into project-based coach/facilitators.
