Chesapeake Bay Academy educates bright students with learning challenges including attention disorders (ADHD), dyslexia, and other learning differences (LD). CBA is the only K-12 school in Hampton Roads both licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to serve students with Developmental Delay, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and other Health Impairment (OHI).

LOWER SCHOOL

The Chesapeake Bay Academy Lower School enrolls students ages 5 and older who require a self-contained, non-graded classroom. With an 6 to 1 ratio, our students, including those with learning disabilities and attention disorders, receive individualized attention and direct instruction in all academic areas and are taught all skills to a level of mastery. Students are able to receive remediation in the necessary subject areas while receiving acceleration in others, providing a unique, encouraging, and motivating environment for students and families. The Lower School actively teaches social skills and helps students express themselves appropriately in social situations both in and out of school. The faculty works closely with the students and their families to set realistic goals for transition to the next level and/or to Middle School and decisions are made as a team as they face the challenges of the future.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The primary goal of the Middle School at Chesapeake Bay Academy is to equip all students with the skills needed for success at the next level of their education. The curriculum focuses on providing students with the academic, behavioral, and organizational skills necessary to achieve their goals. To ensure that students can easily integrate their Chesapeake Bay Academy experiences into those of a more traditional environment, each objective aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).

Each middle school student has an Individualized Plan (IIP) that outlines measurable goals in specific areas along with specific strategies and accommodations for achieving their goals. The IIP is developed, implemented, and monitored by the student’s advocate with parental approval. The Teacher Advocate becomes the expert on each individual student assigned to their care. The Advocates are organizational coaches and liaisons between the student, teachers and the parent. Positive relationships are established between the student and his/her Advocate.

The Middle School academic week operates on a block schedule. Three hours and forty-five minutes of instructional time is devoted to each of the core areas of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science every week. All middle school students are also enrolled in foundational courses which are Art, Physical Education/ Health, Technology, and Reading skills.

UPPER SCHOOL

The Upper School at Chesapeake Bay Academy provides an accredited high school program which concludes with a private school diploma. Our school environment combines freedom and structure to support student success. Students have a unique opportunity to express themselves through our advocate program in which students and their teacher-advocate develop a bond of trust and support. Structure is provided by the Individualized Learning Plan written for each student, a customized academic planner where students keep track of assignments and projects under supervision from their advocates, and weekly contact with parents. The rapport established among students, faculty, and families truly sets Chesapeake Bay Academy’s Upper School apart from other high school programs.

At Chesapeake Bay Academy, teachers adapt their instruction to fit the learning needs of their students by individualizing instruction and assessment and by determining redirection on a student-by-student basis. Other aspects of the Upper School that maximize achievement are the small class sizes and the School-to-Work program. This program, which takes place during the three weeks following Spring Break, enables each student grades 9 – 12 to work as an intern in a local business. Students return from School-to-Work energized by their experiences in “the real world.” Ultimately, the structure we provide in concert with the freedom we allow prepares students for college, work, or a combination of both. Graduates from CBA’s Upper School have attended various local colleges as well as excellent colleges and universities throughout the country.

The mission of Chesapeake Bay Academy is to educate students, including those with learning and attention disorders, whose potential may only be realized through an individualized academic program and to empower students to transition successfully from each of three separate school divisions to the next most appropriate educational or career setting.

School History: In October of 1989, 60 parents united by their commitment to create a learning environment where their children would be known, appreciated, and most of all, understood, founded the Chesapeake Bay Academy. Located in a shopping center in Norfolk, Virginia, the parents and staff passionately pursued their philosophy that personal relationships among children, parents, faculty, and staff are at the heart of teaching and learning.

CBA moved from our original location in 1993 to leased classroom space in the Heritage United Methodist Church on Baker Road. We went on to achieve accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and finally settled in our current 50,000 square-foot state-of-the-art home in Virginia Beach. Yes, we’ve grown a bit since our beginnings. We educate one of the most diverse student populations on the Eastern seaboard and have served more than 1,200 families, graduated eight classes from the 12th grade, and launched the Dominion Education Center to provide supplemental services to additional families throughout Hampton Roads. CBA is fully licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to serve students with Other Health Impairment (OHI), ADHD, and Specific Learning Disabilities.

However, we still adhere to that philosophy that started in that shopping center. Each year we renew the commitment and the passion that originally created Chesapeake Bay Academy, and we celebrate as capable, creative students grow and reach their full potential under the guidance of our parents, faculty, and staff.
 
Programs and Services:

The Primary Intervention Program - is offered to children ages five to seven with academic concerns demonstrated either through comprehensive psycho-educational assessments (not a component of this program) or sub-optimal response to other structured academic interventions. This offering allows parents of these children to continue with the child’s primary educational placement in other settings while still accessing Chesapeake Bay Academy (CBA) instructional resources in the area where they are needed most.

School-To-Work-Program - The Chesapeake Bay Academy School-to-Work Program is designed to add another dimension to the total learning experience at our school. In their third trimester of each year, all students in grades 9-12 spend three weeks during school hours working at jobs in the community. An important aspect of our program is matching students’ interests to "corresponding positions" in area businesses. Currently, there are over 150 different placements, and over the course of four years in CBA’s Upper School, the student is placed in four different work environments.

Summer Learning - is a remedial program that uses the same techniques that are so effective in our traditional curriculum - small classes and individual tutors that allow one-on-one interaction with the students. CBA uses specialized programs that stress phonics and fluency, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, writing and math.
