Philosophy/Belief Statement: Our Philosophy • Every child is valuable and necessary to our society. • Every child is unique and has a different combination of strengths and weaknesses. • Children deserve to be taught in a way that allows them to be successful. • Children need individual attention from educators in order to properly assess and address their needs. • Children must have the earliest possible intervention to mitigate the effects of learning differences on their academic success and emotional well-being. • Children need an emotionally safe environment in order to learn. • Children need a school that addresses their social, emotional, physical and academic needs. • Children need a joint cooperative commitment between family and school in order to be successful. • Children benefit from the use of technology in the remediation of learning differences. Because this is our philosophy - • We will use the most current diagnostic tools to identify a child’s learning challenges. • We will adapt our teaching strategies to meet the changing needs of the students. • We will integrate teaching of organizational/compensatory skills into the daily curriculum. • We will commit to having a very low student/teacher ratio. • We will provide a PreK and Kindergarten program for early detection of learning differences. • We will create an atmosphere of mutual respect and a structured, secure environment. • We will continue our commitment to a complete curriculum that includes art, music, library science, recess, and physical education. • We will provide extra-curricular activities that correspond to current students’ interests and abilities. • We will use a multi-faceted approach to communication with parents. • We will introduce and use new technology as part of the instructional process, and identify and provide access to whatever specialized technology a student requires.

School History: Our Background
Summit Academy of Greater Louisville has been educating children with learning differences since it was incorporated as an independent, non-profit school in  February 1992.  

Margaret Thornton and Rosemary Middleton, co-founders of Summit Academy, believe that a conventional school setting may not meet the needs of every child.  Too often children are asked to adapt to a school’s policies, procedures and programs, rather than adapting the school to meet the unique needs of the learners.

With this in mind, they opened Summit Academy in August 1992 with 21 students and a staff of five.  The school is now educating over 125 students per year and has a faculty and staff of 48.  And we are still growing!
